Cecidologists are not alone in being excited by either the personal or reported discovery of new species and we seem to have had a fair share of 'new' species of late. Redfern, Shirley & Bloxham's British Plant Galls, published in 2002, cites many species of gall causers which many of us would regard as truly 'new' to Britain, since they are conspicuous and are unlikely to have been overlooked by earlier gall-watchers. No doubt the next edition of the keys to British plant galls will have a further crop of 'galls new to Britain'. 24
