The hit of the 1980s, ornamental grasses promise to be the garden rage of the 1990s as well. It seems a good time to take another look at the most dramatic grasses of all--the bamboos. New bamboos are introduced every year, and new information on growing bamboos is being published, largely through the efforts of the American Bamboo Society, an organization with nearly 1,300 members in forty-two states and thirty-seven other countries. Bamboo collections are increasingly seen in public gardens. Bamboos are undeniably beautiful. They can also be useful as hedges, screens, ground cover, and specimens in containers or in the open garden. They are easy to grow, rarely troubled by pests, and, once established, flourish with little care, even enduring moderate drought. Container-grown plants can be set out at any time, but fall or winter plantings need less irrigation.
