摘要

Mark Twain told his public that "the rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated." Like the great American novelist, the daily newspaper has heard its death knell sounded on a regular basis many times in the past. Perhaps you remember when a new mediumthreatened the newspaper, because its functionality would trump that of the daily rag: it was faster, more immediate, more personal, and in the long run cheaper to use. You could say "radio", "television" or "the Internet" to describe the new medium inquestion, with equal relevance--and an equal lack of truth. At the same time we've also heard that the younger generation won't read the newspaper as much as its elders did, eventually dooming the gray old lady to be read by nobody under the age of 112.
