Dear Madam I am a little concerned to read on page 5 of the February issue of Petroleum Review that 'a growing amount of data indicates that ethanol is not as environmentally friendly as ethanol advocates have claimed'. The carbon dioxide mitigation when ethanol is substituted tor gasoline is precisely calculable and there is no scope for 'claims' on the part of 'ethanol advocates'. If such advocates are also considering such things as NO_x (nitrous oxide) and PM10 (particulates), emission of these will be strongly dependent on conditions and are irrelevant to the raison d'etre of fuel ethanol, which is, of course, its carbon neutrality.
