摘要

The oil and gas industry accounts for nearly 6% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions1 and is under considerable pressure to embrace and lead the debate around energy efficiency. That said, the upstream oil and gas sector has been late to the table-driven by the need to increase production. However, propelled by volatile oil prices and the need for rapid cost savings, as well as increased external pressures to demonstrate good environmental practice, this is beginning to change. Today there are significant opportunities to reduce the energy intensity of upstream operations-even for ageing offshore assets. And it makes good business sense. Upstream operators define 'energy intensity' as the quantity of energy required per unit output. Measures which are undertaken to reduce the amount of energy required per unit output are referred to as 'energy efficiency'. Thus, lower energy intensity in operations can be driven by the adoption of more energy efficient measures.
