Scottish Power says it is likely to permanently close its 2 400 MW coal-fired longannet power station in Fife, Scotland, by March next year, reports Energy World. The station failed to win an electricity supply contract from National Grid recently. Longannet's geographic position greatly disadvantages it against other thermal plant located m the south of England, due to the current transmission charging regime. The facility faces a transmission penalty of ￡40mn/y, solely because of its location. Neil Clitheroe, CEO ScottishPower Retail and Generation, said: 'The current transmission charging regime is a major barrier to any future investment in flexible thermal power generation in Scotland. In any future scenario for Scotland, it is vital that the network here is supported by flexible generation to compliment renewables.'
