Pipeline transport of natural gas ties the producer and the importer into mutual dependence but leaves both open to the behaviour of the transit state(s) where one exists. The well publicised disputes between Russia and Ukraine concerning the latter's role as a transit country for the former's gas to the lucrative West European markets have highlighted how important bilateral agreements can be for countries thousands of kilometres away. Mojgan Djamarani reports.
