Study and Application of Weakly Gelled Shear Strength-Improving Agent (GEL-30) for Solids-Free Drilling Fluid

Conventional shear strength-improving agents (such as high viscosity carboxymethyl cellulose (HV-CMC), hydroxyethyl (HEC), etc.) cannot meet the low shear rates and high viscosity required for solids-free drilling fluids. In addition, most polymer shear strength-improving agents are not highly biodegradable and are more polluting to the environment after use. Focusing on these problems, in this article biopolymer was used after activating, compounding, and other technology in surfactants, we developed a novel weakly gelled shear strength-improving agent. Lab research and field application showed that this weakly gelled shear strength-improving agent (GEL-30) had excellent heat and salinity tolerances. The weakly gelled shear strength-improving agent has superior viscosity (at 160°C, after 16 hr aging, the viscosity of 10% NaCl solution was still higher than 80,000 mPa.s at 0.3 r/min). In addition, it has excellent cuttings carrying ability. It is biodegradable and innocuous, which meets the requirements for drilling engineering and environmental protection.
