With the crisis in medical isotope production, procurement failures of new nuclear plants in Ontario, challenges in repairing the reactor in Point Lepreau, New Brunswick, strong opposition to extending the life of the Becancour plant in Quebec, and SNC-Lavalin, a firm with no major experience in the field, acquiring Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) at a nominal price, the subject of nuclear power does not need an accident abroad to make headlines in Canada.
