Confinement measures are crucial for safe production of transgenic plants not intended for human or animal consumption, according to a new opinion from the European Food Safety Authority. Assessing the safety of pharmaceutical and industrial crops as more new biotech varieties are introduced, the EFSA's GMO Panel calls for collection of data responding to the risks of accidental intake from biotech crops released into the environment but not intended for human consumption. The EFSA opinion covers transgenic plants grown for a wide range of non-food uses, including biofuel production, industrial or medicinal products, landscape improvement and ornamental use.
