Panama's Plant Sanitation Directorate is under intense pressure to modify a 2008 regulation restricting the use of carbofuran and replace it with a blanket ban, due to concerns about residues in the food chain.The pressure intensified last month when the agricultural attache in the United States embassy informed the directorate that all fruits and vegetables treated with the substance will be banned from the U.S. market (see article, Page 4).
