European Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel told reporters after a meeting last week of EU member-state farm ministers that she is "deeply concerned" about the threat posed to the EU animal feed supply by failure to establish new rules on low-level presence of unapproved biotech material in grain shipments. There could be a "massive feed issue" if soybean imports suddenly dry up due to failure to establish workable rules on residues of transgenic material in non-biotech import consignments, she said, adding, "The EU has a huge interest in securing sufficient fodder at affordable prices."
