The European Union's food agency last week caved in to pressure from governments and green advocacy groups and pledged to cooperate more closely with member-state regulatory authorities in its risk assessments of transgenic products.On May 15,the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA)called its national equivalents to Brussels for a meeting where the agency set out plans to increase member-state involvement in its risk assessment process.The agency has long been under fire from governments and advocacy groups,accused of ignoring opposing views as well as of industry bias.At a Council of Ministers meeting last March,member-states were almost unanimous in calling for EFSA to open its doors and let national agencies play a greater role,especially when they had different views from the European scientists.
