The European Union and Canada last week signed a final settlement to resolve a six-year World Trade Organization dispute over approvals of biotech crops. The deal opens formal dialogue channels between the two sides and represents a potential template for the EU to resolve its arguments over biotech regulation with the United States and other countries. Although Canada has agreed to drop its formal dispute at the WTO level, the EU isn't expected to modify any of its legislation on biotech products. The WTO's dispute settlement body will be notified of the mutually agreed-upon solution.
