Environmental advocates and conventional growers are lobbying Brazil's National Biosafety Council (CNBS) to immediately halt biotech corn plantings and keep the ban in place until reliable segregation mechanisms emerge.Biotech corn cultivation is forecast to dramatically increase from 1.5% of total corn acreage this year to more than 60% during the 2009-10 growing season (see PTCN June 8, Page 6). Environmentalists and growers are convinced that conventional corn varieties are being forced out of the market.
