A University of Massachusetts,Amherst research team says it has developed rice varieties engineered to resist the uptake of arsenic and other toxic metals.More than 80% of the world's population depends on rice as a staple food,but production is dropping in the rice paddies of Bangladesh,parts of India and South and East Asia due to toxic levels of arsenic in the topsoil,according to UMass plant and soil scientist Om Parkash,who leads the research team.
