Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences have gained regulatory approval for a new generation of stacked biotech corn seeds they plan to launch in the United States and Canada next year. The SmartStax variety combines several traits that offer corn plants protection against both insects and weeds. No fewer than eight different herbicide tolerance and insect-protection genes are incorporated in the new corn seed, which will allow farmers to cut time and money spent on herbicide and pesticide spraying.
