The European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) GMO panel says rat feeding trials should only be carried out when there has been substantial genetic modification of plant varieties, such as drought resistance or salt tolerance, and not for varieties that are pesticide and/ or herbicide resistant.Released last month, the GMO panel's 119-page draft assessment is likely to further inflame tensions between EFSA and some member-states and advocacy groups that want a more precautionary approach to biotechnology. The panel also argues that post-market monitoring is next to useless at a time when biotech critics want more monitoring for any long term effects.
