FOR something that was once thought to be a not-very-useful by-product of particle physics research, synchrotron radiation has come a long way. It is now widely used for research applications in chemistry^ biology, physics and materials science. As a result, many synchrotron rings have been designed with the express purpose of supplying intense electromagnetic radiation and, worldwide, nearly 40 of these so-called second- and third-generation sources are now either in operation or under construction.
