IN1642, three French scholars announced that they would give lectures in support of the idea that matter is made of atoms. The authorities confiscated their writing, and prohibited any teaching .about atoms tjjacler penalty of death, Some three and a Jxalf centuries later the same fate is unlikely to befall Gordon Kane. His book, a popular account of modem particle physics, is a small masterpiece that deserves a very wide audience, from non-scientists owth an enquiring mind to profes-sionals in the subject seeking inspiration for making their work more accessible to others.
