Physicists in Hong Kong have come up with a theoretical design for a device that can make both itself and a nearby object invisible. The apparatus would comprise a dielectric surrounded by a material with a negative refractive index, inside which would be a miniature copy of the external object to be cloaked. Combined with the negative-index material, the copy cancels the electromagnetic field in the space around the cloak and object. Meanwhile, the core of the cloak restores the electromagnetic field, minus the scattering that the object would have created.
