We all knowthat turbulence in the atmosphere makes stars twinkle, but it also severelyblurs telescope images. Newton real-ized this back in 1730,when he wrote in Opticks that "the Air through which we look upon the Stars, is in perpetual Tremor...The only Rem-edy is a most serene and quietAir, such as may perhaps be found on the tops of the highest Mountains above the Grosser Clouds".
