I hesitate to take issue with a fellow of the Royal Society, but there is a flaw in Brian Ridley's argument (January p21) that it and other scientific societies should not take a stance on issues such as climate change. Ridley rightly notes that it was Isaac Newton who gave the account of gravity to the world, not the Royal Society, but the theory of gravitation had no i mmediate consequences for the life and death of civilization. Learned scientists were free to debate the new theory without any thought that governments might want to take action on the matter.Even if there had been a growing popular opposition to the facts revealed, it would have been settled by some years of further research.
