Gerald Holton's other passion is, of course) physics. That is why all physicists are particularly indebted to him for his historical studies of the human element in our subject. This collection of some of his more recent writings demonstrates the remarkable focal depth of his vision. He can zoom in, providing a microscopic examination of a year or two in the life of Albert Einstein, or he can rack back for a macroscopic view of the place of science in our culture over a period of centuries.
