"Astronomy is in the midst of a golden age,"wrote Catherine Cesarsky, my predecessoras president of the International Astro-nomical Union (IAU), earlier this year inPhysics World (March pp22-24). I believethat is certainly true and it is an opportunitythat we must take full advantage of. Astron-omy is one of the great ways to bring scienceto the public – the images of the universeobtained using the Hubble Space Telescope,for example, are full of beauty. Astronomyis all about us. Indeed, the Earth and the lifeon it have developed from the cosmos, andthe sky is the one laboratory that all human-ity shares equally and that is accessible to all.There is little about the subject that appealsto fear – except, perhaps, the occasionalkiller asteroid. So what better science toinspire and educate people that what we donot know is definitely worth knowing?
