"Hold on a second while I load the entire universe into the computer."The opening line for my presentations at the Space Visualization Laboratory of the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, US, never fails to elicit a chuckle from visiting members of the public. Yet within a minute, a computer model of the universe has in fact loaded, the visitors have donned their stereoscopic glasses and we are off, flying through a 3D map of the universe. We pass galaxies, galaxy clusters and giant superclusters containing thousands of galaxies. On we go past quasars that are 10, even 20 billion light-years away and finally past the cosmic microwave background –the relic light from the Big Bang -to the edge of the observable universe.
