摘要

Strolling through the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, past the bohemian cafes and out towards one of the city's leafy suburbs, it is clear why Richard Muller says he lives in a lovely part of town. As I arrive a few minutes early at Muller's home, I am greeted warmly by his wife. She tells me that Richard is busy searching for flights, and asks politely if I mind waiting in the living room. It turns out that the couple will fly to Sweden the following day to attend the Nobel-prize ceremony, at the invitation of Muller's former student Saul Perlmutter, who shared last year's physics award. A few minutes later - flights booked - the 65-year-old Muller enters the room and asks me what I think of the neighbourhood.
