Thump! An apple hitting the ground is said to have triggered Newton's idea of gravity as a force - a discovery that explained the dynamics of the universe and challenged the world view at the time. Centuries later Einstein recast gravity as the curvature of space-time in his general theory of relativity, promoting it to an even more fundamental and all-encompassing role. However, general relativity has been found not to be compatible with quantum mechanics, while the holy grail of "quantum gravity" - or how to unify all known interactions in one theory - remains one of the most fundamental challenges of our time.
