A COMMON party trick in my youth, when people had pianos, was to hold down a chord with the right hand and strike a brief identical chord with the left hand. If you had your foot on the sustaining pedal, the higher pitched chord would sing out by resonance. Energy would mysteriously flow through the piano frame and set the higher strings vibrating. Indeed, the best way to think about resonance is as a frequency-dependent energy transfer.
