  • 2018 Retrospective: Fitch Solutions Key Food & Drink Themes

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2019年第JAN.期

In this article, we revisit the six key themes that we set out for the Food & Drink industry in 2018. All of them have played out with a high level of success. The industry continues to undergo a period of transformation, with the traditional global players reacting to a slowdown in demand for their iconic products. Instead growth is coming from niche brands with a focus on health, convenience and local sourcing. In order to capture this demand, the global F&D majors have resorted to launching similar products while also looking to acquire these fast-growing brands. While health is perhaps the most important one, new areas are opening up for these companies to explore including technology, marijuana and other craft products. Tariffs are one of the risks facing the industry and have caused a level of turmoil in the industry leading to higher prices and re-evaluation of supply chain strategies to shore up profits.

Trade risks feature prominently as a key theme in 2019, identified in five out of the 10 industries we cover in Fitch Solutions’ Global Industries Outlook 2019 Special Report. Sustainability and the ongoing shift to a lower carbon economy is the other prominent theme for 2019, which, for the first time, runs across a range of industries, impacting sectors from Consumer to Agribusiness to Energy.

  • Shifting Consumer Preferences Impacting Turkey Food Spending

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第AUG.期

    1. Inflationary pressures owing to significant weakness in the Turkish Lira will weigh on food spending growth in USD terms over H218 and 2019. Consumers will prioritise locally sourced produce over premium, imported brands as disposable incomes come under pressure over the short-term. 2. Over the longer term, Turkey's attractive consumer demographics underpinned by a large, young, urbanising population presents significant growth opportunities for the food and drink industry. 3. Consumer dietary preferences are shifting, with fruit and vegetables rising as a share of total food spending amid emerging healthy eating trends, at the expense of baked goods and confectionery. 4. In a competitive confectionery market dominated by local players, value-added products via new flavours, shapes and packaging will be key to achieving growth.

  • Western Europe Food and Drink Insight Europe (Region) Coca-Cola's Big Move Into Coffee Takes It Head On With Starbucks

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第OCT.期

The Latest: On Friday August 31, Coca-Cola agreed to buy UK-based coffee chain Costa Coffee from Whitbread in a deal worth USD5.1bn (GBP3.9bn). Costa is the second largest coffee chain globally behind Starbucks with over 3,800 coffee shops across 32 markets, in addition to 8,237 vending machines. The deal marks the latest step in Coca-Cola's goal to become a 'total beverage company', diversifying away from its core carbonates business (which still makes up over 60% of total volumes) into faster-growing drinks categories that are more aligned with consumer trends.

  • Small Impact From Sugar Tax, Forecasts Revised Down

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第jun.期

On April 6 2018, a tax on sugary drinks went into effect in the UK, having been proposed in the government's budget statement in 2016. Beverages that contain 5g of sugar per 100ml are now taxed at 18p a litre, there is a larger levy on drinks with more than 8g of sugar per 100ml at 24p a litre. This has led to the an extra 50p added to the price of a large bottle of Coca-Cola, or 8p to a standard can for example, as some manufacturers pass the levy onto consumers. Pure fruit juices and milk-based drinks are exempt from the tax for now. We previously highlighted the need for soft drinks manufacturers to diversify their product portfolio in order to offset the impact of the tax and appeal to wider health trends (see 'Diversification The Key For Soft Drink Manufacturers', September 1 2016).

  • Brexit Scenarios: Implications For Consumer Industries

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第DEC.期

Leaders of the EU27 states met on the 25th of November 2018 to endorse the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, and, approve a political declaration on future EU-UK relations. While the EU signed off the negotiated withdrawal arrangement, the prospective Brexit deal faces major hurdles being passed through UK Parliament, amid cross-party opposition (see Quick View: Crucial Week For Brexit Negotiations, November 19). While some form of 'soft-Brexit' being agreed remains our core view, a vote against the Withdrawal Text would materially increase the chances of a 'no deal' Brexit or even a second referendum being called on the UK's EU membership. Ahead of a crucial few months leading up to March 2019, when the UK is expected to leave the EU, we examine the anticipated impact on UK consumer industries in the event of a 'Soft-Brexit' and 'No-Brexit' scenario.

  • Fitch Solutions: Food And Drink Key Themes For 2019

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第DEC.期

Ongoing health awareness, falling meat consumption and moves towards premiumisation will define which food & drinks segments and players within them will outperform and underperform in 2019. Coffee, low to no alcoholic drinks, fresh fruit and vegetables are the headline sub-segments poised to record the strongest growth in 2019. Grocery retailers are having to adapt to this demand by adding more of these products in their stores, while positioning themselves as 'must visit' locations. Trade tensions and tariffs will loom over the food and drink industry, and global players will begin to feel the negative effects of this as they pass on higher prices, a by-product of trade wars, to consumers.

  • Young Consumers Uncorking Low- Alcohol Wine Demand

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第140期

BMI View: The growing trend of health-consciousness has led to the growth in demand for offshoot alcohol categories, like low-alcohol wine. Tesco is the latest retailer to have launched its own range of low-alcohol wine through its stores in the UK to capitalize of the growing consumer demand especially among young adults for low or no alcohol drink options.

  • Blockchain In Agribusiness: Plenty Of Benefits But Commercialisation A Few Years Away

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第AUG.期

The agribusiness sector's interest in blockchain is growing rapidly with trial programmes multiplying and companies devoted to the technology emerging quickly. The benefits of blockchain for agriculture are extensive from farmers to trading and food companies, especially in terms of supply chain efficiency and product traceability. However, the technology remains immature at this stage and is still a few years away from feasibility at scale with considerable challenges to overcome to make it a reality.

  • UK Craft Beer Demand Will Not Falter Anytime Soon

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第JUL.期

BMI View: UK's wealthy consumer base and growing sophistication in tastes offers significant growth prospects for premium alcoholic drink categories, including beer. Looking to tap into this market, Heineken has acquired a minority stake in London-based craft brewer Beavertown Brewery, signalling the former's desire to focus and strengthen its craft beer portfolio. However, we caution that Heineken will need to invest further in craft beer in order to keep up with competition and gain greater exposure to this space.

  • Eurozone EU-Japan Agreement: Largest Boon To Wine

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第sep.期

    1. The signing of the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement presents considerable opportunities for food and drink majors in the EU, and we believe the greatest will be for wine producers in France, Italy and Spain. 2. The premiumisation trend and sophistication in tastes will drive the demand for luxury and premium wines from the largest exporter of wine to Japan- France. 3. We also note strong opportunities for pork and cheese producers that will benefit strongly from changing dietary patterns in Japan due to the influence of westernisation.

  • Positive Sugar Consumption Outlook But 'War On Sugar' Gains Momentum

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第OCT.期

Key View: Amidst 'healthification' and 'back to natural' consumer trends and rising government scrutiny regarding sugar-linked obesity levels, sugar consumption is facing mounting headwinds. We forecast demand to rise in the coming years, driven by growth in developing markets. However we see downside risk to this view coming from increasingly stringent policies targeting sugar and a fast shift in consumers' attitude, towards a negative perception of sugar. Sugar demand will become increasingly dependent on the outlook for consumption in Asian countries where most future additional demand will come from. Headwinds for sugar consumption are mounting globally, as concerns of consumers and governments about the negative impact of eating sugar are gaining momentum at a fast pace. What was only considered a risk a few years ago is now becoming a mainstream trend, and will increasingly weigh on sugar consumption going forward.

  • Sainsbury's-Asda: Strength In Numbers To Combat Competition

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第jun.期

Sainsbury's and Asda, the UK's second and third largest grocery chains respectively, have agreed to merge in a deal that will see the duo leapfrog Tesco to become the country's leading mass grocery retail (MGR) player. The combined business will have revenues of GBP51bn, 360,000 staff and over 2,800 stores (including general merchandiser Argos which is owned by Sainsbury's). Both the Sainsbury's and Asda brands will be maintained as part of the tie-up, and US-based Walmart, which paid GBP6.7bn to buy Asda in 1999, will receive GBP3bn in cash and a 42% stake in the group.

  • Five Key Themes For Europe Agribusiness

作者: 期刊:Western Europe Food and Drink Insight 2018年第NOV.期

    1. EU wheat production in the ongoing 2018/19 season will fall sharply due to adverse weather. 2. The rigid negotiating stance of the EU makes the prospect of the two extreme ends of Brexit - a very soft 'Brexit in name only' or a no-deal cliff-edge Brexit - more likely, with important consequences of UK agribusiness. 3. Europe will see strong adoption of precision agriculture due to its large and diverse agricultural production, its supportive policy environment and its strong Agtech ecosystem.
