The discovery and subsequent development of chromium-doped forsterite(Cr:Mg2SiO4) as an important tunable solid-state laser tunable between 1150 and 1350 nm have generated considerable interest in obtaining information on the basic properties of this material. The unique spectroscopic property of chromium-doped forsterite is that the tetravalent chromium (Cr(4+)) substituting for tetrahedrally coordinated Si(4+) was identified as the lasing center. The electronic structure of forsterite has been studied by absorption and emission measurements as well as electron paramagnetic resonance. These measurements clearly demonstrate the presence of both Cr(3+) and Cr(4+) ions in forsterite. jg.
