Recent advances in manufacturing technologies permit the production of largeplastic components by injection molding. The techniques required to manufacture aircraft transparencies by injection molding are currently being developed as part of the Frameless Transparency Program. To evaluate the effect of melt flow index (MFI) on the behavior of injection molded material, panels were molded from Dow Calibre 300 resin with various MFIs. Some of the panels were dimensionally mapped to evaluate the effects of MFI variation on shrinkage. Tensile tests performed on coupons cut from the panels were used to evaluate the effect of MFI variation on strength and elongation. Birdstrike tests on the panels were used to evaluate the effect of NFI variation on impact resistance. Results and conclusions of the test programs are presented. (MM).
