A three-phase program was undertaken to evaluate paint removal techniques andprotective coatings for Air Force aircraft, with a focus on graphite-epoxy composite substrates. The first phase identified and evaluated 10 alternative depainting methods to offset chemical and plastic media blasting techniques. The second phase identified and evaluated protective coatings to guard against the effects of plastic media blasting on composites. The final phase conducted performance testing of protective coatings under multiple paint and strip cycles.
