The objective of this program was to demonstrate the feasibility of novel densification process based on supercritical fluids. Using this process carbon/carbon composites were impregnated with silicon carbide precursors and pyrolyzed to produce oxidation resistant pore coatings. The resulting samples were characterized in terms of silicon distribution, mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance. The solubility behavior of candidate carbon and silicon carbide precursors was determined in supercritical propane and carbon dioxide. In addition, two silicon carbide precursors were fractionated and characterized to establish the molecular weight dependence of the char yield. The results of the solubility and fractionation studies were then used to guide the impregnation program. (JES)
