This Annual Report describes the electrophoretic fractions and trypsin-inhibitory capacities of culture fluids from organ cultures of developing and healing sulfur mustard lesions produced in the skin of rabbits. These culture fluids extract the extracellular fluids within the lesions and thereby enable us to monitor changes in the mediators that control the various of the inflammatory process. Serum proved to be major source of unbound extracellular protein within acute inflammatory lesions, and the serum proteinase inhibitors seem to be the hosts' major defense against damage by local proteinases. The trypsin-inhibitory capacity (TIC) per milligram of protein in the culture fluids of healing lesions was markedly less than the TIC per milligram of protein in the fluids of peak lesions.
