As the availability of Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) thick films increases in recent years, this material is becoming more attractive for large-area hydrophone applications. By taking advantage of the long strip configuration of PVDF, a 4 by 4 hydrophone array was fabricated. The electrode layers on the strip were patterned to give four 6.35 cm by 6.35 cm square elements. Four strips were aligned in one direction in the bottom layer, and four other in the perpendicular direction in the top layer. Each element was then connected electrically in parallel, such that the two layers of PVDR formed the desired 4 by 4 array. The array was extensively tested, and the results of vibrational, acoustical, and phase measurements are discussed.
