摘要

Bacillary dysentery is a localized, ulcerative infection of the large bowel caused by shigellae and some strains of Escherichia coli that are able to invade, multiply within, and destroy cells of the colonic mucosa. Enteronivasive E. coli (EIEC) and Shigella flexneri contain a 140 megadalton (Mdal) plasmid that encodes for one of more functions required for bacterial invasion of epithelial cells as well as chromosomal genes that code for additional factors required for intracellular multiplication. Shigella sonnei is similar except it contains a 120 Mdal plasmid that also encodes for 0 antigen production. The large virulence plasmids of shigella and EIEC share a high degree of DNA homology.
