Civilian and military communication networks use satellite links for digital transmission of information. The analysis of performance of digital communication systems operation over non-linear satellite channels is a difficult task and no complete analytical treatment of the problem is currently available. Several recent efforts have been directed towards the evaluation of performance as measured by the end-to-end symbol error probability using Monte-Carlo simulations. These simulations require excessively large sample sizes and are not practical for estimating low values of error probabilities. In this report, the investigators present a technique for reducing the sample size requirements of Monte-Carlo simulation of satellite communication links. The method is based on a combination of a modified (importance) sampling technique and an extrapolation technique Sample size reduction of the order of 100 appears to be possible with this technique.
