Laboratory and Field Evaluation of a Commercially Available PCB Field Test Kit

A PCB Field Test Kit, manufactured and distributed by CENTEC Analytical Services, Inc., was evaluated. The Test Kit shows promise in lessening the burden of analyzing large numbers of transformers. USAEHA-prepared PCB-fortified mineral oil samples were analyzed by both USAEHA and CENTEC personnel using the Test Kit under laboratory conditions. These same samples were analyzed by USAEHA under field conditions. Results for these tests were generally favorable. Analyses of actual transformer oil samples by USAEHA using the Test Kit in the field yielded lower mean PCB concentration levels for a large part of the concentration range, as compared to EC/GLC. These results were, however, inconclusive due to a very small sample size. No actual transformer oil samples were analyzed by the Test Kit under laboratory conditions in this study. At present, therefore, without additional data, use of the Test kit for analyses of actual transformer oil samples should be accompanied by EC/GLC confirmation, until such time as the data obtained indicates that monitoring can be lessened to ordinary quality control levels. Personnel should be well-trained and experienced in the use of the Test Kit before undertaking independent analyses. (Author)
