摘要

An analytical combustion technique and FT-IR spectroscopy was used to characterize the reaction between three aminosilane coupling agents and carbon dioxide. These coupling agents are used in glass fiber-epoxy composite systems to improve the mechanical properties of the composite. The coupling agent/carbon dioxide reaction was characterized as a function of pH, drying environment, organofunctionality, and temperature. The amount of carbon dioxide reacting with gamma-APS (gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane) varied with the pH of the treating solution. The greatest amount of carbon dioxide reaction was found to occur at natural pH (10.62). The aminebicarbonate salt which formed was shown to be unstable to heat since heating for two minutes at 90 degrees C removed all the carbon dioxide which was present. The structure of gamma-APS on E-glass was found to vary depending on the pH of the solution. These results suggest that the aminebicarbonate salt itself may not have any effect on the final mechanical properties of the composite. (Author)
