This study examines the value of the high school graduates as a quality indicator for identifying young men for enlistment in the Armed Forces. The primary interest of the study is directed toward the young men who would be able to successfully complete their first enlistment in the Marine Corps and the effect a high school diploma has on their success. The study investigates the effects of a high school education as it pertains to abnormal attrition, disciplinary problems, and job performance in the military. Comparisons are made between servicemen with high school diplomas and enlistees who are less educated at the time of their enlistments. The study concludes that the high school graduate is a quality indicator for enlistment and that the best candidate for enlistment in the Marine Corps is the high school graduate who enlists at an early age.
