Many surgeons consider side-to-side portacaval and interposition mesocaval shunts hemodynamically identical. The distribution of portal flow after side-to-side portacaval (12 mm orifice) and dacron interposition superior mesenteric to vena cava (12 mm diam. x 3 cm length) shunts was compared in anesthetized dogs. The distribution of portal vein blood flow was determined by assaying the distribution of radioactively labelled microspheres (CE141, CR51, and SR85), 15 + or - 5 micrometer diameter injected into veins of the portal system. Following venograms to assure shunt patency, microspheres were injected, and the animal sacrificed, and the liver, lungs and kidneys removed. The radioactivity of these organs was then appropriately counted. All the microspheres lodged in the liver in control portal injections. The distribution of microspheres in the shunted dogs is tabulated.
