The report presents the results of an experimental program which evaluates the scuffing resistance properties of a conventional (AISI 9310) and an advanced high hot hardness steel, Vasco-Jet 1000-2 (X2),gear material when various methods and finish levels are used. The program consists of two parts which are manufacture spur gears of AISI 9310material using a Curtiss-Wright developed hydrostatic grinding machine for the final grinding operation,and manufacture spur gears of Vasco-Jet 1000-2 (X2) material with a wide range of surface finish levels. These levels ranged from honed of about 3RMS to ground of 32RMS. These gears were then all subjected to step load scuff tests. (Modified author abstract)
