Studies of 'slow'guided modes on partially metallic, multifilm waveguides show that,while losses with such modes are too large (1/e decay distances of 100wavelengths or less) to use these devices as integrated modulators,their unique feature of high field concentration in a very thin metal film makes them attractive as integrated optical bolometers. Multifilm,all-dielectric waveguides can increase the efficiency of integrated optical modulators by at least 60%. Films evaporated from PbI2are found to be 'damaged'by Ar ion laser radiation at power densities as low as 50mw/sq cm,for exposures of about one hour. The damage takes the form of a refractive index change of the order of 1-10%,and appears permanent. (Author)
