This paper gives examples of the initial difficulties and subsequent rewards experienced by the psychiatrist performing a liaison role on the coronary care unit. Once the psychiatrist avoids the pitfalls inherent in his first weeks on the service, he will find that not only is he asked to make day-to-day contributions to patient care, but also to provide input to ward policy and also to help design research investigations. The author's experience in these areas is presented. (Author)
