The report presents a finite-element shell analysis of a hydrophone using the MARTSAM II program in a UNIVAC 1108 computer. In addition to the piezoelectric and elastic properties of the materials, the effects of end-cap geometry and physical properties were considered. Loading was applied as a train of plane waves acting directly on the surface, and no interaction with the surrounding water was considered. Both the theoretical development and formulation of the MARTSAM II program are presented. The analysis indicates that the performance of present-day hydrophones could be readily improved by modifying the geometry and material of end caps to minimize discontinuity stresses and fringing effects at the end-cap/cylinder junction.
