摘要

In 1967, the Torrey Canyon disaster focused the world's attention on the problem of large-scale oil pollution and alerted the public to the chronic oil spill problem plaguing the coasts of the world. Subsequent major oil spills have further raised the level of concern. In response to society's demand that these problems be confronted, the United States Coast Guard has embarked on a program to develop technology to prevent the ecological and economic devastation which results from oil pollution. Industry has also started to respond to society's demands by offering products and procedures for the treatment and prevention of oil spills. Volume One provides information on the state-of-the-art of available methods for combating oil spills along with their basic technology. We have rated the effectiveness of each method on the basis of technical, ecological, and operational considerations and presented qualitative cost information associated with actual oil spill cleanup operations.
