摘要

The absorption spectrum of 0.01- to 0.05-percent ytterbium-doped calcium tungstate at liquid helium temperature was measured. Some of the samples contained sodium for charge-compensation. The effect of Na-charge-compensation for Yb was similar to that for Na-compensated Ce in the same host. The spectrum contains an extensive complex structure that is not explained by present theory. Two vibronic lines associated with the lattice modes previously reported are identified. The crystal field parameters were calculated to fit the main lines of the spectrum. These were calculated with and without mixture of states of unequal J. Measurements of the Zeeman effect allow the unambiguous identification of the lowest 2F5/2 symmetry. In terms of the free-ion J M states, this level consists of a combination of M = plus or minus 5/2 and plus or minus 3/2 function. The g values observed at 31 koe for this state are g (parallel) = 1.2 plus or minus 0.1 and g (perpendicular) = 1.5 plus or minus 0.1. (Author)
