In the military and in large commercial organizations demands for each item that is maintained in inventory often occur at "retail outlets" which are widely dispersed geographically. Typically these organizations main¬tain some of their stocks at the retail outlets and the remainder at one or more 'warehouses' that supply the retail outlets- The warehouses are in turn supplied by internal manufacture of product or by outside vendors. In complex systems there may be several levels of warehousing, e.g., national, regional, and local.
