POLARIZATION OF INFRARED RADIATION BY BREWSTER ANGLE REFLECTION FROM A GERMANIUM SURFACE

This report contains a study of the polarization of the reflected component of infrared energy that is incident at the Brewster angle upon the plane surface of a germanium sample. The principal surfaces of the germanium sample are optically flat and are parallel to within 5 seconds of arc. A polariscope, designed to fit the Perkin-Elmer, Model 13 Infrared Spectrophotometer, is fabricated with provision for the independent adjustment of the angle of incidence of both the polarizer and the analyzer along with the independent freedom of rotation of the analyzer to permit crossing the two stages. The calculated Fresnel curves are verified with experimental data for 2.1 microns, and the polarization versus wavelength is measured and found to be constant for 3.4, 5.0, and 8.3 microns.
